The homeowner got in touch because moss had taken over their roof. Almost every tile had thick clumps of it along the lower edges and in the joins between tiles. The moss had also washed down into the gutters and packed them almost solid.
Heavy moss on a roof isn’t just ugly. It holds water against the tiles and lifts the joins where tiles overlap, so rain can be driven underneath. Over a few winters that can lead to frost damage and cracked tiles. The blocked gutters meant rainwater was already spilling over the edge instead of reaching the downpipes, and that water runs down the walls and soaks into them.
